As many know, Dwight, the Coordinator of Equity and Justice Education, is leaving Friends’ Central at the end of this year. As a community we have appreciated everything Dwight has done for our school and the many lessons he has taught us all. As a closing to his time here, I asked him a few questions about some of the memories he has had.
Focus: How many years have you been at Friends’ Central?
Dwight: I've been at FCS for 9 years as a faculty/staff member and 4 years as a student between 2002-2006. Between 2006 and 2010, while in college, I used to come back to FCS often to do some work in the alumni office. Not sure you could count these years, but sometimes I do :)
Focus: What has been the most rewarding thing about your time here?
Dwight: Just being able to connect with folks. Parents/guardians, students, faculty/staff, alums, and prospective families. I really do just love people, and I've gotten to connect with so many people over the last few years. Literally thousands! FCS will always have a very very special place in my heart for the ways it’s allowed me to connect with my own humanity and deepened my commitment to seeing and honoring the humanity of others.
Focus: Do you have any words of wisdom for us as students based on your experience?
Dwight: We get to choose to be in the right relationship with ourselves, with one another, and with the physical space (trees, fields, cafeteria :) ). Don't forget to take care of one another.
Focus: What is one specific memory that stands out to you from Friends’ Central?
Dwight: Aww, so many! One that's coming up right now is that I was the senior project advisor for a few students in the class of 2013. They made this ridiculously awesome video called the FC Shake. It was just amazing to see their minds come up with all of these ideas and then they happen. It was so great.
Also, my first year co-teaching (2017) a class with Monty about James Baldwin. That whole semester I just learned so much!
Track and Field, countless assemblies... I could go on and on…
We wish Dwight the best in his future endeavors, and we will all miss him here at Friends’ Central!
