This school year’s holiday assembly was certainly one to remember. It began with Mr. McDonnell’s surprise announcement that Mr. Darling is retiring at the end of this school year. Mr. Darling has been a math teacher at Friends’ Central for nearly four decades and is truly loved by all students lucky enough to have experienced his fun and impressive style of teaching.
Though the holidays had not officially come upon us, the assembly’s many musical performances immersed us in those same feelings of celebratory bliss. A group of senior boys left both the students and faculty laughing with their dance, choreographed by seniors Kelsey Beck and Leila Sella, to Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Underneath the Tree,” by Kelly Clarkson. The senior chorus then treated the audience to their dazzling rendition of “White Winter Hymnal,” by Fleet Foxes. These unparalleled performances allowed the seniors to commemorate their final holiday assembly at Friends’ Central and truly were sights to behold.
Keeping with the holiday spirit, House Band amazed us all with their long-awaited performances of holiday classics “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!” This exceptional performance reached another level with surprise vocal accompaniment from head of school Beth Johnson, who then invited all seniors to join her up on stage for senior story time. This year, the book was Sneezy the Snowman, by Maureen Wright. This unique tradition perfectly concluded the assembly as it shone a light on the senior class and reminded students of how far they have come before reaching their final year at Friends’ Central School.
