If you have ever been in Deb Skapick’s room, you might first notice the swing hanging from the ceiling or the various posters on the walls. However, if you went in there right now, you may be drawn to the boxes upon boxes and the bags of clothing in the back of the room. The Service Committee is working with a few organizations this winter to send donations to different locations. Due to COVID-19, the need for essential items has increased as many people are out of work and are struggling to meet basic needs. A few different corporate businesses donated boy’s shirts, socks, and underwear to Cradles to Crayons, which were then sent to FCS to be sorted, bundled, and packed. These articles will later be distributed throughout the greater Philadelphia area.
Cradles to Crayons is an organization that works to ensure that kids are provided with the essentials they need. There are three Cradles to Crayons locations in the United States, located in Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Cradles to Crayons partners with 473 agencies and helps to serve over 1,700,000 children.
Along with working with Cradles to Crayons on this project, FCS has also been gathering winter clothing donations from the community to give to other organizations around the city. Children’s coats and other winter clothing will still be sent to Cradles to Crayons, but women’s clothing will be donated to Our Closet and men’s items to the Bethesda Project. Our Closet is a volunteer organization that collects clothes and then distributes them throughout the Philadelphia area. The Bethesda Project is a non-profit that helps to provide support services to adults struggling with homelessness in Philadelphia.
